How To Search This Site

You can search this data base in a number of ways, such as last name, first name, State, or by branch of Army service (infantry, cavalry, and artillery). To find all in a particular regiment, type in its number; for example, to list all the veterans of the 47th Indiana known to be buried in Huntington County, type in 47 and then all such infantry of Indiana would be the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. You may also look just at individual cemeteries. Or, if you know an individual was in a Company A, type in A and get that list.

Note: This data base is a WORK-IN-PROGRESS.

As Civil War "old soldiers" passed on to a better world, a Federal soldier marker was placed on many graves-by no means not all. Since the Federal Civil War soldier marker was a benefit, some received it for the economy as well as the honor; while yet many other men who were veterans have privately obtained makers. As one of our librarians notes, most every man seemed a veteran and the desire for a distinguishing marker was not necessarily thought of. While some of the cemeteries in Huntington County have been researched to be sure all men who were Federal soldiers are recorded, others have not; and, with error of omission a certain fact, it may never be that we can present a data base that is close to perfected. Nonetheless, we think the importance of getting a common focus for our research and of providing what we do know to the public justifies this website, which we are honored to post in honor of the veterans of the Federal armies who saved the Union in the "War of the Rebellion" 1861-1865.
